Foot Orthotics
What Are Foot Orthotics?
Foot Orthotics are an insole or shoe insert that is placed inside the shoe to help restore and correct the
function of feet. The science behind them is known as bio mechanics. It is a science that studies the bodies
movement as it walks or runs. Many who suffer from incorrect foot bio mechanics can suffer not only from foot pain
but can also experience pain in areas such as the knees, hips and lower back.
The term used to describe poor foot bio mechanics is over-pronation. This means that when you take a step the
arches of your feet flatten out too much and the feet and ankles are pushed inwards. Foot orthotics are designed to
correct this over-pronation. They do this by restoring the feet and ankles to their natural position when a step is
taken. They also offer support to the arches of the feet preventing them from flattening out too
much.

Types Of Foot Orthotics
For those with more serious bio mechanical issues then a custom made rigid foot orthotic may be the only
solution. These are not available over the counter and you will need to consult a podiatrist in order to obtain
them. Also those problems such as totally flat feet, very large bunions or foot ulcers will require the services of
a foot care professional. Although very effective, custom made rigid foot orthotics can be expensive at around $400
- $600 a pair and some users find them difficult to wear.
A cheaper alternative to custom made orthotics are known as heat mouldable foot orthotics. They are off the
shelf products that can then be heated up to help them mould to the shape of individual feet. For an even more
customized fit wedges can be added, although this is not always necessary. This type of foot orthotic costs around
$150 and users find they can get used to them relatively quickly.
For the vast majority of those with bio mechanical issues pre-fabricated off the shelf foot inserts have proven
to work very well. Users also find that they customize to the shape of their foot with regular wear. Off the shelf
foot orthtics are very inexpensive and are much easier to get used to than customized inserts.
How Do Foot Orthotics Work?
Foot orthtics work by restoring incorrect foot function through realigning the feet and ankles. They also
provide even weight distribution through the foot as each step is taken. This can help to alleviate pressure
on areas of the foot that are particularly painful. Additionally, foot orthotics can help the body to absorb the
shock experienced through each step that is taken.
Many of the problems that occur in the lower body can point directly to incorrect foot bio mechanics. Foot
orthotics can therefore be helpful in alleviating pain in areas such as the ankles, knees, hips and lower back. It
is for this reason that many people have found using orthotic foot inserts has helped to reduce pain not just in
their feet but in other areas of their body.
